Cape Town Gets Rock Radio
In the musical void between 5fm and GoodHope FM exists an unhappy niche. Lovers rock ‘n roll, until recently, have always neglect their radio, as it always felt like the radio neglected them first – seeing it more as a “7-o’clock news device” than a playlist. In a new democracy with a government of national unity, it’s borderline unconstitutional to exclude rock lovers from the joys of radio.
Enter Afrikaans Alternative FM, a brand new radio station serving the greater Cape Town area.
Rollingstone magazine caught up with founder Hein Du Plooy, according to him the target market for the station are “open minded individuals who feel their listening needs are not met on other stations.’
He continued regarding the musical direction of the station” ”We play 60% English solid rock music and 40% Afrikaans Alternative music. We average 80% South African music so we believe we can play an important role in promoting local music.”
Tune in to Afrikaanse Alternative FM on 91.3 FM.

Legit radio station!
An absolute MUST HAVE station, in order to keep the mind sane and stimulated, no more having to listen to home made play lists, ALL THE TIME, as there were never any decent radio stations to listen to.
The drag from Tokai to town on the M3 in rush hour, and back, have become a pleasure, never thought I’d say that.
WELL DONE, HEIN DI PLOOI, !!!!!!!! WE SALUTE YOU !!!!!!
I really enjoy listening to this radio station and have told all my friends to tune in to 93.1. Unfortunately it appears that they are having problems broadcasting as the sound quality is bad and even at times none at all. This must be rectified immediately or you will loose listeners who get fed up.
Sort this out and you will have many more happy listeners.
Cheers, Tony Eva
That is because they should tune in to 91.3fm not 93.1 fm
What can we the fans do to help. Was so great to have a freethinking music station. Can’t do the other sad stations and singing to myself is a hazard.. 91.3 we need u really, really need you.
Alternative and Rock awesome, i am 55 yrs and go down memory lane, most time with the older rock – Pink Floyd being my favourite, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple.
Keep it up guys we love you
Where have you gone????? Can’t find you anymore…Whattsupp?
Heyda ouens! waar de hel is julle dan solank? ons kort dai tunes! N’ mens begin suffer van ontrekkings simptome! So kammaaaaan laat ons Rock n’ Roll hoor!
I discovered AFM a few months ago and I’m really relieved there’s ONE radio station out there that’s free of Usher, Chris Brown, Khanye West and similar shite. This morning I hit the road after a surf to the sound of “Roadhouse Blues,” – great Friday song! I’m probably in the minority, but I really wouldn’t mind if AFM had NO DJs at all – just the music. The music line-up is strong enough to do without chatter between songs. No offence and nothing personal to to people who talk between songs, but I’d rather just hear the songs.
Hi there. You guys are refreshing..I live in Atlantis and accidentally tuned in. Please don’t forget Uriah Heep, Traffic, Deep Purple and those Emmerson Lake and Palmer classics! When last have I heard Deep Purples ‘Child in Time’ All the best. Angus.
Love it – I came across this station by mistake as I don’t listen to radio normally, change of mind. Can’t get this in southern peninsula though?
Please advise…
Ons het dit vandag by die werk ontdek, best dag ooit!
I am a 60+ woman who understands very little Afrikaans but I love this radio station! The music they play is the best ever and a very welcome change from what we have had to put up with with other radio stations. Whoever chooses the content has got great taste. Well done, keep it up!
